Keeping an eternal perspective is extremely important in dealing with infertility personally and supporting those dealing with infertility. I am very grateful that the advice from your friend’s mother offered her comfort, as it is often difficult for “supporters” to know what to say to their friends and family. Of equal importance is knowing the personality of the friend you are supporting and developing a trusting relationship so that you can know how your comments will be received. A comment that might be comforting to one person could be frustrating to another. Clearly your friend’s mother knew exactly what her daughter needed to hear. What a blessing it is to have close relationships with someone like this who can offer personalized comforting thoughts.

Prior to your comment, I had been considering this topic as an “On My Mind” article, so look for it in the near future.

I have a friend who is devastated after 2 years of trying and a few treatments as well. She was talking to her mother one day and her mother said, "Maybe YOU'RE ready to have a baby, but maybe that baby isn't finished with what he/she needs to do and learn up there!". It has given her great comfort, and with being members of the church, we KNOW there is a pre-existence and that we developed personalities, talents and learned many things.
